February '23. At the Supreme Court, Samuel Kraetzer, racecourse detective, claimed £IOOO from the Lvttelton Times Company for damages for libel, alleged to have been contained in a paragraph in condensed correspondence as follows:—" 'Patriotic' why the Canterbury Jockey Club employs a German as a racecourse detective." Counsel for plaintiff said that although Kraetzer was not mentioned by name, lie was identified as the person referred to. The defence was a denial that the paragraph referred to plaintiff. •The jury returned a verdict for plaintill for £SO and costs. The Judge held that at a time like the present it was obnoxious to be called a German. Plaintiff gave evidence that ho was born in victoria, and that his parents v.-ere Russians.
