AWARD OF MILITARY CROSS.
PRICE OF COAL FIXED. Received 24, 12.55 a.m. London, February 23. Hie Military Cross has been awarded to Lieutenant McLean, 4th Fusiliers, who was wounded at Ypres. He was formerly a clergyman in Auckland. Four Yorkshire collieries, with an "annual output of 4,000,000 tons, have fixed the price of coal at 15s, to prevent the inflation of prices. AUSTRALIA'S OPPORTUNITY. FRIENDLY ADJUSTMENT ADVOCATED. Received 24, 12.10 a.m. London, February 23. Sir Evcrard Im Thurn, lecturing at the Geographical Society, described the grim delight of Australia at the sudden and unexpected arrival of the opportunity to prove her loyalty, and wipe out thoroughly every trace of the invader from the Pacific, whose intrusion she always eyed with deep distrust and dislike." He hoped the result would be a friendly re-adjustment with the French allies as to the assignment of the New Hebrides to one or other of the Powers, go as to bring about a settlement of the problem of the Government of the Pacific Islands.
