A RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
WOMAN AND CHILD INJURED. THROWN INTO THE RIVER. Ey Telegraph.—Per Press Hastings, Last Night. Mrs. Catherall, wife of Alfred Catherall, a 1 painter, of Hastings, and her four-year-old son, were crossing the railway br.dge over the Ngaruroro river this inoniinsr, when the Napier train swung I round the bend. The driver promptly api pl'ed the brakes, but the distance wa c J too short to pull up in. The c?\vcnteller hit the mother and cliild, n-ri both fell between the sleepers into the river beneath. The child floated,, and was speedily rescued, but the mother sank in deep water. Messrs. H. Spillcr and L. Easbrook, both of Napier, were passengers on the train, and they promptly dived in and brought the unconscious woman to the shore. On arrival at a private hospital it was found that she had sustained severe cuts and bruises and internal injuries. The child is suffering from a badly crushed foot and shock. Mrs. Catherall is still unconscious. The driver's promptitude undoubtedly saved both from insta'nt death.
