STRATFORD MOUNTAIN HOUSE.

IMPROVING THE ACCESS. When tli c Stratford County Council granted a subsidy of Gs 8d in the £ towards the Government grant of £250 for mctjiiling the Monmouth road conditionally on the, balance being available, he thought that the tradespeople of Stratford who catered for th c travelling public would readily hav e found the other 13s <M, remarked the. chairman of the Stratford County Council yesterday. When he found that tile matter was hung up by the tradespeople, he had since thought that the matter was to come up again, the council would not vote anything. There was no doubt the Stratford people had caught the council on a soft wicket, but this would not occur again. This remark was drawn fortli during the reading of the minutes, when the matter of the grant came up and the chairman stated that Mr. .1. IS. Riclitrils had asked the council to call alternative tenders for metalling to the value of £250 and £,TOO. Mr. Richards had informed him that the committee had not been able to complete arrangements for financing their £lfifi 13s -Id, to enable them to take up the council's offer of £B3 Gs Sd, but by next month they may have completed their arrangements. ■"Cr. ChristofTcl favored adhering to the original resolution to the effect tli.it if 'the committee's share was not available the council's subsidy should lapse. Cr. Walter moved that alternative ■tenders should be called as asked. He pointed out that there had been many calls made on people of late owing to various funds in connection with the war, and it was hard to raise money for anything else at present. They must recognise that this metalling would be of benefit practically to the whole of the county. ITe knew of two or three picnic parties that were being arranged

in tli,. county for Easter. 'Moreover the metalline; would benefit settlers, two of whom, lip. understood, wore tryin}.' to raise a loan of .€IOO. Cr. Smith seconded. Or. ChristofTcl had no objection to calling alternative tenders, but ho would not nKrec to tile council spendinsi any of its own money until the whole, was available. Councillors were practically unanimous on this point, and the motion was carried.
