NEW EASTERN COMMANDER. 1 . EFFECT OF AIR RAIDS. ACCORDING TO GERMAN ACCOUNT. Received 15, 12.5 a.m. Amsterdam, February 14. General Eychorn commands the German operations in East Prussia. The Kaiser and General Von Ilindenburg are conferring at Insterburg. German official reports state that the hostile air raids on the coast did deplorable damage to civilians and their roperty, but that the military loss was unimportant.

Professor Goldstein has issued a glowing tribute relative to his reception bv the British Association of Australasia. The wel.-ome, he says, could not have benn more cordial. The V.-nvaorts protests against certain schoolmasters compelling the children to learn tl'ie "Hymn of Hate." In some cases the verses directed against Russia and France have been deleted, and stronger new ones against England substituted.

While Moses continued to hold up his hands, Israel was victorious, and if the people continue praying w e shall win." The German Press is using the wildest language, respecting neutrals. The Hamburger Zeitung says: "The hate and envy of tlie whole world concerns us not at all. If neutrals do not protect their flag against England, they have no right to be held in esteem by Germany." Amsterdam, February 12. The Kaiser lias returned to the eastern front.
Paris, February 12. M. Ilanotanx writes that he has received information from Berlin, stating that the General Staff is divided, the chiefs mutually upbraiding one another bitterly, and sometimes furiously, owing to their disappointments at the slowness of the campaign. London, February 12.
Herr Hirsch, speaking in the Prussian Diet, said he knew that tile war was not desired by the people of the belligerent lands, and that its end was every-' where longed for. He hoped that under the influence of this desire for peace, especially for the laboring classes in all lands, an assured peace would come speedily, to the well-being of the German people and all humanity.
SHORTAGE OF BREAD. THOUSANDS OF BAKERIES CLOSED. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received 14, 5.30 p.m. London, February 14. Copenhagen reports that 3100 bakeries have been closed in Berlin, and that customers at restaurants bring their own bread; also that invitations to dinner parties contain the request: "Please bring your bread!"
GERMAN REJOICINGS. A VICTORY IN EAST PRUSSIA. Received 14, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, Feebruary 14. A German official message claims to have captured 2000 Russians, twenty cannon, and thirty macTiine-gung in the Mazurian Lake! district, but over what period is not specified. There were general rejoicings ill Berlin for the victory in East Prussia. A day's holiday was ;iven the schools. ■ i....
