MARRIED TROOPERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. Timaru, February 12. A meeting of the Public Safety Committee to-day decided to suggest to the Minister of Defence that no more married men be accepted for the front so long as single men are available, unless the former make full provisions for their wives and families before leaving.

SOUTH CANTERBURY QUOTA. Timaru, Last Night. About a hundred men from South Canterbury, bound for Trentham camp, joined a special train from Dunedin yesteniay afternoon. THE SCARBOROUGH RAID. PIECE OF SHELL IN NEW PLYMOUTH. Mr. T. B. Salter, of New Plymouth, lias shown us a fragment of one of the shells fired into Scarborough by the German "baby-killers." The scrap was sent by his father, who writes that the fragments are being collected as souvenirs—the first shells ever fired in war on the English coast. It was estimated that over S(H) shells were fired in all. Mr. Salter's brother is a dentist in Scarborough, and his business premises were badly shaken.
