ENTERTAINMENTS.

ROYAL PICTURES. Foremost on the new programme showing to-day is a "Big Beri" star, drama, entitled "The Live AVirc." This introduces us to the Rocksea Electrical Works, where John Blake presently arrives to take up the duties of assistant engineer. His chief he finds to be a sin-ißter-lobking man; named Calver, who, it is quite easy to see, is in love with Dora Stern, the 'daughter of the manager of the works. Dora shows she prefers the assistant's society to that of the chief, and jealousy begins to stir in the latter. An accident ripens Dora's feelings for Make, for he, at the risk of his life, prevents her from falling into the sea. After this, hatred of Blake becomes the 1 obsession of Calver's life, and only a spark is needed to set it aflame. That spark is soon struck. Spying upon Bora, Calver sees her writing to Blake. He intercepts this letterj and finds that ft appoints a rendezvous for the. following night, and swears that Blake shall never keep it. He does not know that Dora has seen him, Blake ■ writes the next afternoon to say that an order from Calver to do some repairs on the line that night will prevent him from coming to see her. So she keeps watch on Calver when he calls in the evening, and, when he leaves, sees him return to the works. Suddenly her suspicions turn to certainty, and she sets out to find

her lover. Can she reach him in time f Yes, just in time to prevent him touching the wire into which Calver has turned the full strength of the current. It is the jealous man himself who suf-, fers from the "live wire." Included in the supporting programme is a new Keystone comedy, "Fatty's Gift," featuring that fat and joyous comedian, Roscoo Arbueklc. Other films are: ".Tack Spratt as Strike Waiter" (comic), "The First Christmas" (Edison drama), "Topical Budget," "Tn the Days of '0" (K.B. drama), and "Did He Save ITcr?" (a Luhin comic). Altogether it is a first-class programme.

'EMPIRE PICTURES. To-day, at 2.30, a new programme will commence at the Empire Theatre. As. usual, the management Pas procured and will screen an interesting series of war topicals, which have just heen received. "Beauty and the Barge," the well-known comedy by W. iW. -Jacobs, has been exceptionally well handled by the London Film Company, with the result that the production has proved to be a great success wherever it has been shown. Cyril Maude, unquestionably one of England's finest actors, takes the leading part in this delightful comedy. A subject which every Scout in Xew Plymouth should see is entitled '"A Boy ; Scout Farm in Sussex," and gives a splendid idea of the daily routine on a model farm. Other subjects on the programme are: "Setting the Style" (Vita- ! graph comedy), "Across the . Burning Trestle." (Edison drama), "Our Mutual fiirl" (Reliance fashion drama), "The Toy Shop" (Princess drama), and "Bill takes a Lady out to Lunch" (Reliance comedy). Ring 'phone 3G5 for reserves.
