ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.

A MUSICAL TREAT. A "rare musical treat" correctly describes the concert given in the Good Templar Hall on .Wednesday evening by [ Mr Gerald van Heck's orchestra and a ; number of leading vocalists of New Ply- , mouth and Stratford. The audience was not large, but it was keenly appreciative. : The orchestral numbers included the selections "Mikado" (Sullivan), "Cavalleria ■ftusticana" (Mascagni), the march •'Carrillon" (Laurandcau), ballad, "Ah, It was a Dream" (Frederick), intermezzo "Kisses' (Penn) and others, and all were rendered in a manner most creditable to the members of the orchestra an/t their conductor. The latter contributed the violin solo "Malinconia" (liolim). This was a brilliant performance, Mr. Van Heck showing, as usual, a complete mastery over his instrument. The audience was very persistent in its demands for an encore, and he responded with a very pretty number, "Swing Song." composed by himself. A cornet solo, "To a Star," by Mr Syd. Bernard, of Stratford, was greeted with hearty applause. Airs Massey, of Stratford, delighted her audience with her singing of "Long, Long Ago" (with violin obli-

8»to by Mr .Van Heck). 91i c has a rich voice, whicli she used to the most possible advantage, and in response to a well deserved encore, contributed "The Watch, and Mr. 11. Nippcrt also gave a line rendering of ".Spring- and Fall,'' and responded to an enthusiastic recall with ''Wake Up." Mr Brian Malone, of Stratford, sang "Tnvietlls" splendidly, and as an onco re "Mother 'o Mine." Messrs STii). pert Tiros. contributed "Larboard Vi atch,' and Mr IT. Xippert alos gave a splendid rendering of Twiddle's song "-Music and Words"' The accompaniments were ably played by Miss Aggie Kobson, of Stratford, and .Miss Olive Mackfiy, of New Plymouth.
