THE SATURDAY COMPETITION. UESKETT'S FIXE PERFORMANCE. I The second scries of matches in tho third round of the week-end competition was played on Saturday, when some fine cricket was witnessed. At the Recreation Grounds, New Plymouth, with 230, against Tikorangi's nine for SB, are in a good position, and should obtain a three-point win. At Inglewood tile leaders in the competition suffered a two-point reverse at the hands of the local team by 88 runs. At Western Park, Law and Tikorangi each scored 03 on the first innings, and take a point each. The best performances were:—: WITH THE BAT. This match, although incomplete, was left in such a position at the end of Saturday's play as to give New Plymouth a commanding lead and an almost certain three-point win. Going in first. New Plymouth made 230, the outstanding feature of a generally good batting effort being Heskett's 140. It was an exhibition of forceful, crisp, and discriminating hitting, marred by but one or two dillicult chances. Nieoll (10) went with the score at 20, and Bottrill (10) at 35. Mason scoring only a single, saw the I score to 83, and Weston to 97. Chappell (12) brought the first hundred up with a four oil' Roberts, and shared the run-getting to 124. Heskett's httiing then became very aggressive, and the second hundred came quickly, aided by a brisk 20 from Stohr's bat, including a 0 off Roberts. That howler eventually got Heskett with an unexpected breakback of good length. Hamblyn's 10 completed an innings in which, until quite half the total had been reached, a wellvaried and keen attack was made by the bowlers. Roberts' five wickets for OS was the best of a poor bunch of bowling averages. In Tikorangi's incomplete innings Roberts batted cautiously and soundly for his 57 (not out), two G's and two 4's varying a succession of short runs. Nobody else had any success against the bowlers. Nicolls' six wickets for 44 was the outcome of good bowling, and Mason kept the batsmen very quiet. New Plymouth's fielding wan good on tilt whole, but Tikorangi's was-marred by much slackness. Law batted first, Bcwley and Lash opening to the bowling of Monteath and O'Donnell. At 2!), Lash was smartly thrown out by Hardwick for Ift, which included a 0 off O'Donnell. Runs now came mostly in singles, and a double change was effected at 35. when Girling and Sutherland wont on to bowl. The latter, bowline a nice length, got Elliott and Billing. Hughes and Bcwley carried the score to 47, when the former fell to Sutherland. Hughes (17) was the only one to make a stand against Sutherland and O'Donnell, who came on again, and the end came quickly, Sutherland getting three wickets in one over, and just missing the hat trick. His figures read: 7 overs, 3 maidens, 0 wickets, 4 runs. Albion started well, having two wickets down for 39—Shepherd (IS) and Monteath (10). The next two fell to Lash, without any addition to the score, but O'Donnell stiffened the side, and with the score at six for 52 Albion had a big chance. The tail wagged feebly, however, and the match resulted in a tie. Lash bowled well, taking six wickets for 20 runs. Law went in again, and knocked up 01 for the loss of six wickets (Bcwley 37 and Billing 22), when [ they declared. At the call of time Albion bad lost six for fi!>. UNITED SERVICE DEFEATED. Inglewood batted first. McKenzie opened with a 3 off Bain, and then the latter bowled Kempthorne for a "duck." Nicholls and McKenzie established a useful partnership, and, despite numerous changes of bowling, neither was dismissed until they had scored 31 and 33 respectively. McKenzie played veryattractive cricket. McDonald also played well for his 14. Matthews had hardly got settled before falling l.b.w. to McGie, and his score comprised only five singles. Mcßae played careful cricket for his 23 (not out). Service failed miserably against the bowling of Smith and Mcßae, backed up by keen fielding, and could only compile 50. Bain lifted Smith for a o,' but fell to that bowler in the same over. Stewart, McGie, Osborne, and Ingram were all disposed of for 21, and then Dinniss (II) and Purdue made the stand of the inn'ngs, carrying the. score to 42 before Smith beat each of them. Smith came out with a fine average. Service had to follow on. Bain opened well, but with Mewton. Stewart and McGie all disposed of by Mcßae with the score at 20, a three-point win to Tnglewood looked possible. Bain and Osborne, however, became associated, and the former tackled the bowling in aggressive style, proving particularly partial to Smith and Thomas, lifting the latter for a 0 and a 4 in one over, whilst Osborne was content to keep up his wicket. Tho pair saved the situation for Service, as they were undefeated at the call of time, having added 57 to the score. Bain's tally of 00 included nine 4's and aO. Detailed scores: —•
