I POSITIONS OF THE TEAMS. SATURDAY COMPETITION. Pd. Won. Lost. Pts. tJnitcd Service ..11 10 1 19 New Plymouth ..10 fl 4 0 Albion n 0 5 3 lnglewood ... 9 5 4 i ', Tikorangi 11 3 B—ll Law 10 1 9 -18 THURSDAY COMPETITION. Tnglewood .... 4 3 1 4 Phoenix 5 3 2 4 Tikorangi...... 5 2 3—2 N.P.H.S.' 2 2—o So far the North Taranaki Cricket Association has not received any reply relative to a definite date for the proposed Hawke Shield challenge match. Taranaki submitted Wednesday and Thursday, February 17th and 18th, or the following Wednesday and Thursday. Possibly Wanganui is awaiting the result of the Poverty Bay challenge match before finally arranging with Taranaki, as the Taranaki visit, of course, depends on the Hawke Cun remaining at Wanganui. In the ordinary course of events it would be Wanganui's turn to visit New Plymouth. Should Poverty Bay succeed in annexing the shield—and there is more than a remote possibility of that occurring, as Wanganui has been weakened of late by the loss of several representative players—Taranaki will not proceed in quest of it this seasin. A trip to Gisborne is outside the pale from a financial point of view, as far as Taranaki is concerned. However, when, earlier in the season, the local Association postponed the trip in quest of the shield, they took the risk of some other Association getting in first. North Taranaki players should, however, keep steadily in practice with the Wanganui trip in view, and also with me certainty of South Taranaki playing a return match.

It is to be regretted that arrangements could not have been made so that the Gisbomc visit could have been extended to New Plymouth. A few visits from outside teams would do much to boost cricket along in North Taranaki. If the Shield comes here, however, we should see a few strange faces in quest of the coveted trophy, providing, of course, we do not lose it at the first challenge. Inglewood, owing to a combination of circumstances, were unable to get a team to travel to New Plymouth last Saturday, and so were compelled to forfeit to' New Plymouth. The latter club's tally thereby is increased three points, whilst Inglowood's is decreased similarly. The New Plymouth team were all on the ground at Western Park, ready to play, and then indulged in useful practice for a while, before the majority of them journeyed to the Recreation Ground to witness the concluding stages of the United Service-Albion match. Inglewood did not notify their intention to forfeit until the last moment, but this was probably due to the fnct that their enthusiastic officials endeavored right up to the last moment to get a team to make the trip. Law, after going through two rounds without a win, signalised the opening of the third round by scoring a win oyer Tikorangi, and this scribe is of opinion that, with a little luek, they will have more wins than defeats this round. Elliott and Lash, in the bowling, and Lash and Bewley, in the batting, were mainly responsible for the win. Piirdie was T:koran" : 'icst "fill bowl-r. "iKcraiin ' : ' ■■'<' in second ' '' ,: \., v.. Dinniss and Bain caused Albion's downfall in the first innings, the latter getting the hat trick with his only three wickets. He was also the only doublefigure scorer for his side, in the first innings, as was Clarke for the losers. No less than four of the United Service team touched double figures in their second knock-up. Albion also did better, and, of their five two-ligure men, Clarke was again top with a quickly compiled 24. United Service now appear to hold an unavailable position at the top of the list.
