SPORTING.
KGMONT RACES. I CONCLUDING DAY. The Egiiiont Racing Club's summer meeting whs concluded yesterday, before a fair crowd of sporting people. Light showers fell during the morning, but the • rain cleared oil' after the second race. The course was in fine order, good times being registered throughout the day. The finishes were again very close, and all events were keenly contested. The starting was good, and everything passed oir smoothly. The stipendiary steward, Mr McMahon, had an easy day. The field for the Hawera Stakes only numbered three, and the result being considered a forgone conclusion it was a poor betting race and accounted for yesterday's totalisator turnover falling a , trifle short of the receipts for the previous year. The totalisator figures for the day were £18,213, a decrease of £213 as compared with the second : day's figures last year. The investments for the meeting, however, showed jan increase of £IO3B 10s, the figures i' being £37,240 this year as against £30,201 10s. The details of the racing aro as j follows:

NOTES ON THE RACING. j (By "Moturoa.") The programme commenced with the! Okaiawa Hack Hurdles, Kew being a; scalding hot favorite. Kew and St. Gate broke the line, but Royal Trophy and Ngaputa wen? first over the- initial obstacle and showed the way to Kew entering the straight. Passing the stand ! Royal Trophy fell back and Kew closed |on Ngaputa. Along the back the leaders I cleared out from St. Gate and Tirohanga, I but Kew had the opposition settled at tli<' home turn and ran in an easy winner from the fast finishing Tirohanga, who beat St. Gate by three lengths. Then came Ngaputa, Nita, and Royal Trophy beaten off. Ten high-class sprinters weighed out fm' the Waimate Handicap—the best field seen on a Taranaki racecourse. Wise Bird was very heavily backed, and Bimctcr, Play Off and Gladiole were supported in that order. A fine start was effected, and Gladiole, Bimeter and Wise Bird at once became prominent, with Ineuru last. Three furlongs from home the field bundled, Gladiole, Bimeter, Wise Bird, Te Hou Hon, Play Off and Glenroy being almost in line. Sir Moseley and Master Achilles joined them as they swung for home, and a magnificent .struggle ensued. Over the last furlong the weight told on the top-weights, and, Tree Lucerne, coining fast just beat Master Achilles by a narrow margin, with Tc Hon Hou a neck away, and necks separating Wise Bird, Play Off, Ineuru and Sir Moseley. Glenroy was last.
AH started in the Farmers' Plate, and the public, remembering Silver Flood's fine form at Stratford made him a warm! favourite. Captain Miro was the quickest to find his feet and led Har-1 hour Light and Idol passing the stand.! Along tlie back the order was much the same, and Silver Flood was creeping up| steadily. Once in the straight Silver. Flood asserted himself, and coming on full of running scored nicely from Styrax, who came fast from the distance. Warea was a fair third and Harbour Light next. All the horses carded went to the post for the Atkinson Memorial Stakes. Bertrada was first choice, and Sunbird and Astor hacked in that order. Zetes at once went to ihe front and led Astor and Bertrada past the stand. Along the back Astor fell back and CourtMartial was occupying third place. Zetes was still in front at the home turn, but Bertrada had his measure inside the distance and won nicely by a length. Sunbird and Court-Martial were almost in line, a neek away'. Sea Pink, who appeared sore, was well back in the ruck. A big field of sixteen sported silk in the Maiden Hack Race, Tiora and Blacking being the only ones seriously backed. After a long delay caused by the fractiousnoss of Vestalis, the field got away in good order. Tirana, Vestalis and Blacking were quickly at the head of affairs and ran in that order along the back. Vestalis drew up to Tirana at the distance and had him beaten 50 yards from home, winning by threequarters of a length. Blacking was a length and a half away, and Mahlstick, Escort and Glorify next. The Hawera Stakes only drew a trio —
Postillion, Emperador, and Rinaldo. The race was voted a moral for Emperador, Postillion at once rushed to the front
and had a lead of bout five lengths from the favorite, with Rinaldo three lengths further back. rostillion started to
come back before turning for home, and Emperador collared him as they straightened up. Rinaldo came with a rattle at the distance and looked like catching Emperador, but the latter came away when shaken up and won by threequarters of a length. Postillion was a length and a half away third. Time, lmin 43sec. Toa Tere was the only withdrawal from the Inaha Hack Flat. Crawford, Combustion and Bold Stroke were evenlv backed. When the field settled dowii Zion, Lady Amai and Crawrord were most prominent. Zion closed up on the bend and Crawford lasted long enough to beat Bold Stroke by half a length. Vladineau was a fair third and Combustion next. The adjourned inquiry' into the running of Toa Tere in the Meremere Hack Handicap was concluded, the rider's (C. Price) explanation being accepted. R. •Johnson's actions were viewed with grave suspicion, but it was decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Prior to the races Toa Tere was sold to Mr A. Hall, Wanganui, for 550 guineas. It is understood that the Maniapoto gelding will carry Mr W. Tuck's colours in I future. |
In the Normanby Welter Draft was made a slightly better favorite than Invader and Patronymic. A good start saw Draft dash to the front and lead Patronymic and First Consul past the stand. Draft was then steadied, and Chaminade and Manawhakaha went to the front, followed by First Consul. Chaminade was the first to tur n into the straight, but was at once challenged by First Consul and Patronymic. The latter stayed on best, and won a good race by a head from Chaminade, who beat Stepney by a neck. Invader was close up fourth. TARANAKI AUTUMN MEETING. RE-HANDICAPS DECLARED.
