NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By "Moturoa." I Proceedings opened with the Oliawe Hack Hurdles, Kow, Advancu- ami Millbanks being the only witlnlniwiils. Of the eight runners, (Jlon Nevis, Tiro- ; hanga, St. Gate and Styrax carried the bulk of the investments. From a g:>od start Ascalon led St. Clatc and Katiu over the first jump, Ngaputa being last. I Ascalon was well clear of Katua and j St. Oate as they entered the straight. Passing the stand the order was unchanged, Glen Nevis being in fourth position. Along the back Styrax fell back, running unkindly. Tirolianga made a forward move four furlongs from home, but Ascalon and Katvuf-wcnt away again, and held a big lead as they turned for home, Ascalon ran down the last hurdle and this probably cost him the rare, as Katua joined him at the half-distance and beat him home by three-quarters of a length, Tirolianga was five lengths away third, and St. Oate, Gle n Nevis and Ngaputa next. Kaniki, Glenroy and Ineuru dropped out of the Flying Handicap, leaving a fine field of a dozen to go to the post. Wise Bird was a very warm favorite

but drew the extreme "outer." Astor, i on the rails was next best backed, and Bimeter and Sir Moseloy came in for fair support. Astor broke the line, fol- - lowed by Crawford and Wise Bird. The order was the same as they entered the straight, but Crawford then retired, in leaving Astor and Wise Bird to fight out a sterling finish. The rider of Wise Bird appeared to be rather confident, and despite a strong finishing rush was beaten by a head. Sir Moseley, who made up a lot of ground in the straight was close up third and then came Bimeter, Kewi Poto and Crawford.

Fifteen went to tlie post for the! ! Meremere Hack Flat, Tyson and Vladi- I ncau being warmly supported. When the barrier was released several horses took the tapes with them for a furlong. Zion, Tyson and Martingale were soon prominent, and Lady Amai was fourth when the field settled down. Tyson led into the straight, but was challenged find passed at the distance, by Martingale and Vladineau. This pair were fighting out a good finish, when the outsider, Fortify, eame with a late run and snatched victory on the post from Martingale who was just in front of Vladineau, Tor Tore (who was interfered with when coming fast) and Improve. The defection of Emperador and Victoria reduced the field for the Egmont Cup to eight runners. Sea Pink was very heavily backed, and Square Deal was next in demand. Sea Pink and Square Deal were momentarily in the lead, but at the'end of a furlong Chaminade led Court-Martial and Byron at' a slow pace. Passing the stand Byron was in front, followed by Ladify, CourtMartial and Square Deal, the first half mile taking 55secs to run. The same order obtained as they ran along the back, but Square Deal displaced Ladify three furlongs from home. The favorite was galloping sourly a long way back, and Marshal McDonald had tailed right off. Byron led Square Deal at the home turn, and, lasted 1-ng enough to win by half a length. Court-Martial was half a length away third, and Ima-1 rose, Ladify and Sea Pink followed. Sea Pink's exhibition was very disappointing. Warea and LupinaMx were the only scratchings for the LpJieß' Purse, and of the ten starters Ngapoto, Harbour Light, I'atronata and Idol carried practically the bulk of the totalisator investments. Patronata, Idol and Chief Officer.led a bunched lot past the stand, and at the ! six furlongs post Chief Officer was in front, followed by Ngapoto, Harbour i Light and Idol. Ngapoto assumed command four furlongs from home and the : field closed up on the bend. Harbour I Light then singled himself out and was . clear at the distance. Patronata cani!> ! with a rattle over the last furlong and almost caught Harbour Light's rider . napping. Ngapoto was a close third, i Idol fourth, and Nita next.

Six went to the post for tho Egmont I Stakes, Emperador being an odds on j favorite. Bisogne (on the rails), Emjperador and Gladiole were first away, i Flying Star belying his name and losing [ground. Four furlongs from home Em- \ perador was in front and was not afterwards troubled, winning easily by a length from Flying Start, who beat r Gladiole by three-quarters of a length. : Ineuru, Postillion and Bisogne followed in that order. j Crawford and Miss Fisher were tho ' only absentees from the Waipapa Hack Flat, Combustion and Draft being best backed. Quo Vadis broke the line and led Rosalys and Draft to the turn. Patronymic then came through but could not reach Quo Vadis, who won nicely by a length. Combustion was a good third. Then came Sylvan Dale (who was crossed near the finish), and Mahlstick. Cordon was a bad last. Wild Lupin and Toa Tere were with-) draw n from the Whareroa Welter, Kaniki, Sunbird, and Bold Stroke being evenly backed. Kaniki hopped out first, followed by Te Hou Hon and Calais, At the five furlongs post Te Hou Hou had run into the lead, and showed the way to Calais as they turned for home. Tho pair fought out a neck and neck finish, Te Hou Hou winning a fine race by a head. Invader finished fast a close thirl, and then came Bold Stroka and Sunbird, with Kaniki last.
