Mr Hugh Cameron, aged eighty, was bom at Loth Bannock, Scotland, and sailed in the ship Star of the East for Sydney. He transferred to Otago in ]B.>4, settling at Wyndham about 1866. Ho settled later in Mataura, acquiring the accommodation house and later Cameron's Hotel. He was identified with the Town BoarJ "nd Borough Council, being Mayor of Mataura in 1897 and 1902. He was oneof the party who walked from Dunedin; to Invereargil] to pay the purchase money to the Maoris for the Murihukir Block. He married a daughter of Mr Duncan Bain, of Blueskin, in 1889. He leaves his widow, four daughters, all of ,vhom are married, and five sons, three of whom arc serving in Egypt.
