FIRES.
HOTEL AND SHOPS DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Nelson, February 2. A fire at Takaka at midnight totally destroyed the Telegraph Hotel and sample room, a vacant shop, and Hawkins' butchery. The fire originated in the hotel, which contained boarders and staff numbering fifty, who got out safely. A bucket brigade saved the Masonic Hall ana Kirk and Company's store, both of which were scorched. The De-. fence Department had ammunition stored in the sample room, some of which exploded causing alarm. C. Stuart, licensee of the hotel, is reported to have lost £IOO cash. The town was full of visitors for the annual show which was held yesterday. The insurance is unavailable.
