HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REFORT. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Wellington, January" 30. The High Commissioner reports under date, London, January 29: Petrograd reports that the Russians are assuming the offensive in the north and repulsed the Germans, destroying Pogtegen station. There is continued .fighting in the forests north of Pillkallen and {jiimbinnen. Russia is successfully advancing in some districts. In the reMaigunishen, there, were fruitless Ger-. inau attacks and they afterwards withdrew from the trenches. On the left bank of the Vistula, in the region of Eorzhynunow, the Russians attacking defeated the enemy, using hand grenades. On Wednesday the Germans assumed the offensive, which proved fruitless i'n Galicia and. the Carpathian front from the Dulka. Pass to the Strvi-iMunkaez railway. In the fighting" on the 2Gth and 27tli the Russians progressed, especially south-west of Dukla, where, advancing' by means of energetic attacks, the enemy was compelled to retreat, abandoning ammunition and other stores. At Newillestvaast. north of Arras, the Allies' heavy artillery blew up German ba.ttery at Caissons. Tn Woevre, near Fliery, the Germans exploded a mine intended to destroy the Allies' trenches, and succeeded in blowing up their own. Paris reports that east of Soiasons (.lie iwwy attempted to cross the Aisne at Aloiilinilesrofh.'s and at Bridgehead held by the Allies north of Venizel. Both attacks were repulsed. At midnight on the twenty-eight, Dunkirk was bombarded by several German aircraft.. Several persons were killed and wounded, but material damage was insignificant. 'On the same night, the Allies' airmen dropped many bombs on the Gcr-1 m:i u camps at Laon Lafcre and SoisSOflK. Yesterday a German acroplano was hi ought down at Gerbeviller. Petrograd reports that on the left bank of the Vistula, renewed German attacks were repulsed with heavy loss. Our counter-attack succeeded perfectly, tin! enemy being dislodged from their trenches at the point of the bayonet. On the Galieian front, in the Duxla and Wyszkow Passes, notwithstanding a desperate resistance by the Austrians, Russian progress was maintained, except in the region of the Bskid Pass. On this front during the last three days three thousand prisoners and several guns have been captured. The High Commissioner reports to the Premier as follows: London. January 30, 9.35 p.m. Yesterday the Germans attacked r. force, near Guinchy, but easily repulsed it. Over 200 German dead were counted in front of the British trenches. The British loss was small.
