AN OFFENSIVE LETTER. By Telegraph —Per Press Association. ' Wellington, Last Night. A man named Judah Barsht found at the Magistrate's Court to-day that sending undesirable correspondence by the mail is rather an expensive procedure. The charge against him was thai on 24th December he caused to be sent through the post a postal packet, having thereon words of a grossly offensive character, an indictable offence,A ChiefDetective Boddam stated that the letter objected to had been forwarded to Mr. Metz, a well-known business man, and during his absence had been opened by his brother, who was in charge of his shop. By a strange coincidence, a deectivc was in the shop aS the time/and Mr. Metz handed the letter to him to make inquiries. After reading the letter the Magistrate (Mr. D. G. A. . Cooper, S.M.) asked Barsht {or an explanation of his conduct. The defendant who had rjteaded guilty, said, he had no explanation to proffer, "I leave myself to your mercy," he told his Wor- '' ship resignedly. "You seem rather pleased about it than otherwise," re- - marked the Magistrate. "No, Sir, lam • sorry," he replied. His Worship: "You'll ' be sorry when I tell you lam going to fine you £5 and costs (75.)." Defendant was allowed twenty-four hours in ' which to pay the amount. DfrST-STORM- CAUSES MOTOR COLLISION. Timaru, Last Night. A dust-storm on Washdyke Road today was responsible for a head-on collision between two cars. Mrs, C. N. Orbcll's daughter was driving out, and met Messrs. Murray and Mullrons (architects). Neither of them were going fast through the dust, and did not see each other in time to avoid meeting. Both cars were badly dam- ~ aged, but the occupants escaped injury, except Murray, who was cut about the face with the broken glass I of tho wind-shield.
