LABOR TROUBLES. Sydney, January 28. | The afternoon shift conference lias i failed, all the proposals by both sides being rejected. The men's representatives, after stating that the men had turned down the I proprietors' proposals made at the last' conference, made suggestions for the , abolition of the second shift in various mines within six to eighteen months and • asked an extra threepence per ton af- j ter the first three months to the abolition of the shift and 10 per cent, extra to all employees working on the I second and third shifts. The proprietors turned down the pro-! posals, renewing the offer of the pre-j vious conference and in addition offer- , ing to pay threepence per ton extra j for pick-won coal on the afternoon shift: and to pay twopence per ton for ma- j chine-won coal They also offered to place a limitation on the afternoon shift in various mines of three to five years. There were no proposals for a further conference.
