DISTRICT NEWS.

RAHOTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Church of England committee met on the evening of the 25th inst., and decided to hold the harvest sale and concert on Monday, February 8. Two weddings are coming off shortly in the district, and are being looked forward to with interest. The local baker is busy with the cakes. Quite a big drop in the price of cattle took place at Mr King's yards to-day, particularly in heifer calves, store cows, and bulls. Very heavy crops of Japanese plums are reported in the district, and the present prospects point to them being very cheap. The New Plymouth-Opunake rnotor'bus bi-daily service, to be started next week, should grove a great boon to tne coast people. It is to be hoped the postal department will give us a more up-to-date mail service. We are about 500 people and ought to be entitled to more than one mail per day. The Egmont County Council members and ratepayers will be pleased to know that £2OOO of the long-promised bridges loan has come to light from the Government lending department. Better lato than never! Friday's welcome rainfall proved a benefit to the district. Below Opunake [ the fall was very light. The young tur- | nips are very badly iu need of a good downpour. A settler here who believes in sowing turnip seed as soon as the land is ploughed and harrowed, being the best remedy against the fly, has had his ideal quite upset, as the fly got to work on the "newly-ploughed" first. Tlie Department of Agriculture and Commerce apparently thinks tlie fanners are the ablest men on earth. The form just send to the settlers to fill in and return before January 3ft ask/; them, amongst other crops, to state the estimated yield per acre of turnips, which have only just been sown. Picking Melbourne Cup winners would be easier than estimating your turnip crop per acre.
