THE THURSDAY COMPETITION. The second round of the Thursday competition was continued yesterday. On the New Plymouth Recreation Grounds Phoenix somewhat easily defeated Tikorangi by 121 runs on the first innings. On the day, Tikorangi were outclassed in all departments. Owing to the High School vacation, the Jnglewood-High School matcli did not eventuate. The best performances were:— WITH THE BAT. F. Robertson (Phoenix) CO WITH THE BALL. I Owing to an accident to one of their cars, part of the Tikorangi team arrived late, and it was just after 3 l o'clock when a start was made with the came. Hasell and Kobertson ,opened fur l'hoenix, and carried the score to 35, when the former was bowled by 'Roberts for 11. Braund batted steadily, ai;d assisted to raise the score to 03 before he was out l.b.w. to the Bame bowler for 19. Gwillim had hard luck in getting out to a rising ball. He put up his hand to protect his face, and the ball glanced off his arm on to the wicket. Hardwick, playing steadily, and Robertson, batting vigorously, carried the total to 110 before the latter, who J'.ad been missed several times, was held by W. Foreman for GO. His score included seven 4's and a G. Hardwick went soon after for a useful 11, and Whittle and Cozens became associated. The former lifted Foreman on to the terrace and to the boundary from successive balls, and carried the score to 134. His own total was 19. R. W. D. Robertson played very carefully, and, though he only scored 3 (not out), saw '2l added for the last three wickets, Cozens (13) scoring the majority. Tikorangi failed badly, and Whittle and Braund, bowling . unchanged, brought their innings to a close in 16 overs for 34 runs. The latter was 'brw ing well. The fielding of the Phoenix team was good. Roberts was early disposed of by a smart catch in the slips by Braund off Whittle. Fuller was run cut as the result of a smart return by Cozens. With two men out for 16, Tikorangi's chances looked blue. C.
