a business house burgled. (From Our Own Correspondent) Quito ii sensation was caused in town this morning, when it became known tbat a burglary had taken place in one of tbe business places. It appears that Mr W. Lander, manager of Messrs K. Hannali anil Co. locked up the premises on Saturday night, and on going down on Sunday afternoon to do a little office work, found that the firm's safe was not in its accustomed place. The police were immediately informed, and after a search discovered the safe in the back yard, fully a chain away from the buildin". ' It had been blown open and the contents of the till were missing The burglars had dug a hole and buried the safe prior to exploding it in order to dcadan the sound. About £SO was stolen.
Whoever performed the job must have been an expert cracksman. The police have the matter in hand, and it is to be hoped the culprit will soon be apprehended. A BOY KILLED. A sad accident- occurred on Sunday morning on the East Road, ft appears that a lad named McOullough, had gone with an elder brother to the Stratford feetory with the milk, and on returning, the back band of the harness broke, and the horse bolted Both boys were thrown out, and the young lad was pinned down by the milk cans. When assistance arrived, the little fellow was found to be seriously injured, and before It Stevens could arrive on the scene the lad had expired. ' ACCIDENTS.
Mrs Kit Mumby had the misfortune to break her collar-bone, by being thrown out of a dray, on the Pembroke Road on Monday morning. On Sunday evening, as Mr C. Burkett and his son were driving home from church along Broadway North they were ran into by a motor cyclist, who. it is said, was travelling without a light. Both occupants of the gig were thrown out, and considerably bruised and shaken. Both the shafts of the gig were broken, and the vehicle was considerably damaged. PERSONAL Mr D. McKcown, one of the pioneers of Stratford, died in the New Plymouth Hospital, on Monday morning. It is with deep regret that I have to record the death of Mrs Hale, wife of Mr Joe Hale, which occurred on Saturday evening To Mr Hale who is left with seven small children, the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended. Mrs Carlev. wife of Mr C. Carley, of Cardiff, died' in the Stratford Hospital on Monday morning. Mrs Carley, with her husband, has been fanning at Cardiff for many years, and, will be greatly missed. Two of her sons are serving at the front.
It is reported that Mr J. B, Hine, M.P., intends leaving for the front with one of the contingents. Mr Hine was for a number of years in charge of the Stratford Mounted Rifles corps. MIDHIRST PICNIC. The Midhirst Public School intends holding the annual picnic at the Breakwater on Thursday, February 18. ! MILITARY MATTERS. The Stratford district is keeping its end of the stick tip as regards sending men to the front Already, we have sent more than our quota, and in a few days, another party will be leaving for Trentham to join the reinforcements. By this morning's mail train, a large number of Cadets left for Wiiiigaiini where a training camu is in progress for non-commissioned offi -ors.
