A YOUTH DROWNED.
COMRADE'S PLUCKY .\TTEMPT AT ' RESCUE By Telegraph—Per Press Association. \\ clliiigton, Last Night. A drowning accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Hutt river, the. victim being Philip Pcarse, aged 20, whose parents reside at Trcntham. The • deceased and a boy companion named Archibald John Craig went to bathe in the river at Trcntham Hit about 3.30 p.m., and after they hail been in the , water some time, Pcarse got out of. his depth. Craig went to his assistance, but had to let Pearse go in order to save himself. After going to the shoTe the lad returned to the stream to make another attempt to rescue his comrade. - This time he secured Pearse, 4'< i brought him ashore, but the latter'-was apparently dead. An alarm was given, 4 and several people from the neighborhood made an effort to restore life by artificial respiration. Medical aid was subsequently available, and operations were continued, but without success.
