COI'XT BERCIITOLD'S RESIGNATION. DECLINES RESPONSIBILITY. ADVISES PEACE OX BEST POSSIBLE TERMS.
Received 15, 12.20 a.m. Copenhagen, January 14. A neutral diplomatist who has been interviewed states that the differences between the Emperor and Count Bcrchtold are such that the latter declined to be any longer responsible lor the Austrian war policy. He advised tnat pence should be obtained on the best possible conditions before Austria was absolutely ruined.
OPPRESSIVE TREATMENT OF SLAVS. CZECHS 11UXG. DALMATIANS IMPRISONED. Received 15, 1.5 a.m. Loudon, January 14. The Austrian authorities are becoming more oppressive towards the Slav population. Ten Czechs were hanged at Prague, for possessing a Russian proclamation to the Czechs. Many SerboCroatian leaders in Dalmatia have been imprisoned.
SCARCITY OF COAL. POISONOUS SHELLS. COUXT BERCIITOLD RESIGNS. Vienna, January 13. Official.—The market report shows that coal is extremely scarce. The trade in com and flour has practically ceased and many bakeries are closed. The Germans are using shells containing a certain amount of phosphorus, the smoke from which enables the gunner to note where a missive falls. Wounds caused by the shells are poisonous and untreatable. Count Berehtold, Foreign Minister, has resigned for personal reasons. Baron Stephen Burian, a Hungarian, succeeds i him.
