An i artliquake shock was felt from Ancona. to Naples at. 8 o'clock on Wednesday morning. Eighty buildings were damaged in Rome, and the colonnade of St. Peter's suffered considerably, while 150 windows were shattered in the Basilica. The shock was severely felt at . the Vatican, and the Pope invited everybody; to pray.

The column of Marcus Aurelius was broken in various places, the bas-rciinfs being irreparably damaged. The effect in the provinces was severe. Reports have been received of many deaths, and oi people being wounded in all parts. The shock lasted 70 seconds. hi Naples one Palace sul'i'i-rcd severely. Avczzano was completeyl destroyed, also all the buildings in the surrounding country. The bulk of the 800 survivors were injured. Many villages are in ruins, and relief has been sent.
