THE PRICE OF WHEAT.
COMPLAINTS FROM TIMARU. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Enquiries made on Saturday into the cause of the rise of the price of bread to fl'/;d. for the -111)., and 3d. for the 21b. loaves elicited childly complaints that the alleged shortage of wheat had led to holding and bearing the market, and that the proclamation .fixing the. price of Hour had not been enforced, though known to be disregarded. One business man has written at length to the Premieu on the injustice done to Timaru and Oamaru millers by fixing prices. War or no war, the prices must have gone up owing to (lie shortage here and in Australia. Fowls' wheat' has been selling at (js. and 7s. per bushel. The law of supply and demand ought to have been permitted full play. One miller thought the price should drop immediately the new crop is available. The good heavy rain of yesterday, lasting into the night, will be. of great benefit to the country.
