AX APPEAL FROM LONDON', Tii- Mayoress (Mrs. Wilson) has received (.he following letter from Miss Helen Mackenzie, lion, secretary of the ladies' committee of the Xew Zealand War Contingent Association, London: — "I am writing to enlist your sympathy on behalf of the efforts we are making to collect a stock of warm cothing to keep our soldiers warmly clad while they are in England and at t)ie front. V "Tliis As-oehiion. of which Lord Plunket is the chairman, and my father a member of the committee, 'has been formed for that purpose. As you will understand, we can only appeal in England to New Zealand people, and unfortunately for us, these at the pri'sent time are very few, and many of them are returning to Xew Zealand. We are requiring socks, mull'lers. body belts, shirts, etc. We understand the men are leaving Xew Zealand well equipped, but their needs will he required to be continualy replenished, and 1 am writing to ask you 'f you would be good enough to arrange for knitting and needle-ivork i tc be done in your district, and the goods to be collected for dispatch here. Mv father is trying to arrange with the Xew Zealand Skipping Company to carry such parcels free of freight, and I shall probably write to you next mail, telling \ou what arrangements have been made in this direction.
We have arranged for one convalescent liome. and are now busily making arrangements for the necessary articles for tli» home to he made. We have already equipped with all that they require the 200 members of the contingent who wctp in England when war broke out, and who are now stationed at Puilford Camp awaiting the arrival of the overseas contingent."
DEATH OF ANOTHER TROOPER. Wellington, January S. Advice has been received 'by tlm Defence Department of the death of No. George Vandcrgeff Burlinson, attached to the Wellington Regiment of Mounted Rifles of the main expeditionary force. Egvpt. His death was due to septic poisoning, the result of a fall from his horse. His father is Major • I'nrlinson. officer in charge of the Wera- ■ roa raining School. Levin.
