WHEAT CROP IN 1915.
A PROBABLE SHORTAGE. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Wellington, January 8. In a recently prepared memorandum,! .Mr Eraser, Government Statistician, reports on the subject of the wheat requirements of the Dominion. Taking the stocks as asecrtaihud in November 18 last, the Government importations' 'during January and February, 11)13, and an estimate for the current har■vest, he says that the wheat stocks in 'Xew Zealand will be exhausted by about the end of N'ocembcr, 1015. J!v about] September S, 101,1, stocks will lie below; those of last November, l!)l;i. It would, be inadvisable to allow the. stocks to, get below tliose of Xovcinber, 1013, and ■it will probably be necessary to ar-, range for importations coming in irom ; about the beginning or middle of Sep-1 lember. If all stocks were freely mar-] keted, and the purchases did not exceed J actual milling requirements, the neees-) sity for importations would probably notj arise so soon, but with the general, knowledge of the comparatively small j ami poor harvest there will no doubt be a tendency to hold stocks back. To counteract this it might be advisable for the flovcrnmont to import an additional quantity of wheat about the end of February. 1015.
