FIRES.
BUSINESS BLOCK ABLAZE. By Telegraph.—r«r Association. Auckland. Last Night. A fire, which caused darrage estimated at l.vtvu-i) .i2H(!() ami £3OOO, occurred at Newmarket this afternoon. The outbreak originated in a h\ir,g room ahove the chemist siiop of Wilfred Fookes, furc? rooms being gutted. The* flames spread along the wooden rafters, causing damage to the, ceilings of three other rooms in the tame block. A considerable number of rooms of other shops in the block wet'" I'-imaged by water, the stocks in some (•'■"■- boiity also damaged. The premises 'Veted were: Fookes, chemist; W. me and Co., tobacconists; C. F. Do- das, fish saloon; Koung Young, h'u'u.rev; and Miss P.. Beckmann, confectioner, all damaged by water. The owner of the block is Mr. R. H. Abbott, The shops are insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe Office; Fookes' stock in the Sun office; Lane's stock in the Standard office; Beckmanifs stock in tlie Ocean office. Koung Young was also insured, but Douglas was uninsured.
