Mr J. S. McKellar underwent a serious operation yesterday morning, which, v. e are informed, was quite successful.' A .Sydney cablegram advises t'hat the lion. W in. Trefle, .Minister of Lauds, was •operated on for appendicitis. His condition is critical. Mr I'. M. B. Fisher's resignation lias been received by the Premier, and will presumably be forwarded to the Governor in due course. Inspector McGrath, of Auckland, will ieave to take charge of the Hawke's Lay police district in a few days. His successor -n Auckland is Inspector A. Cvuickshank, if Tiniaru. Sir .J. Farrell, representing J. G. Kennedy, late of Levin, died m London on December 28 last. Deceased, who practised his profession at Levin for a number of years, was very well known throughout i'he district. He was - 1 )!' years of age. Lieutenant Quickc, who was killed in action' against Uie Germans., was born at liaikoura, Marlborough, and was 27 years ot age. He was a grandson of the, late Mr A. S. Collins, of Nelson, and seme time ago succeeded as lieir to tfte St: Cyr estate in Devonshire. Professor Fawsitt, who occupies the chair of CJiemistrv at Sydney University, arrived in Wellington by the Marama on Wednesday evening. He is accompanied by Mrs Fawsitt and their child, and they propose to spend about two months' holiday in New Zealand. They will be guests' of .Mr Robert Gardiner, of Palmei'ston North, for some time, but may afterwards go further afield. Mr S. G. Raymond, of Christchurcai, Crown Prosecutor, is at present staying in New Plymouth with Miss Raymond" and his niece, Miss Hayes. The party have been for a motoring tour in the Napier district, and have been staying at the Dawson's Fails Mountain House for the last few days, Mr Raymond and party intend visiting the North Lgrnont -\fotirit;.'n House before returning to Ohristchv.i'Ch. At n meeting of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, Dr Stanley K. Brown was appointed, subject to the Minister's approval, to the position of medical superintendent at the Southland hospital, a position renderdd vacant through Dr Barclay's removal to \\ e.'dington. There were nine applicants foe the position. Dr Brown Ims been acting in a temporary posjflon since Dr Bare'ay left, and prior to going seuth was in charge of the Wanganui hospital for a short period.—Press Association. The death of Mr John Hyndman Russell occurred at Levin on Tuesday After an illness extending* over several n.onths. Deceased was born in Staffordshire, in England, and emigrated to Australia, goin,» to the Ballarat goldfields. He arrived at Dunedin in 1800.. snd took part in the Gabriel's Gully rush; then went to the West Coast, where he worked in the same mine as the late Mr 11, J. Seddon, and the two became close friends. The late Mr Russell arrived in Wellington in 1874, and took part in the Parihaka campaign. He went to Levin in 189G and settled there.
