CHARGES OF ASSAULT.
TWO TIMARU GASES. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Tiniaru, Last Night. J. P. Campbell Birch, alias Jack Palmer, a Burnham escapee, was charged with the attempted murder of James O'Connell, a farmer, at Clandeboye. The evidence showed that O'Connell was struck, while in bed asleep, on the backet the head and on the neck with a tomahawk, and a dangerous wound was inflicted. The accused was committed for trial.
Denis O'Eourke, charged with assault on Ward, a hotclkeeper, was also committed for trial. 'ln this case Ward was struck over the right' eye, and knocked almost insensible. He is 75 years of age, but the prisoner is a young man.
