SODDEN DEATH OF A CHILD. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Jas. William Blackloek, aged 5 years, f.on of W'ui. 'Blaeklock, an ironmoulder living in Plunket street, St. Kilda, died ijuddenly this morning. The child sufttred from infantile paralysis some time ago.
DROWNING CASE AT AAYAIUXO. ■ (Writes the correspondent of the Waitara Mail:—A sad fatality occurred here' ?? T T hu , r , sday a^ ern °on, .through which J. McCi'ombie, aged 17, employed by Mr Him, Cummins, 'farmer, lost, his life by drowning. Tlie young man, in company with T. Cummins, junr., left the homestead about one' o'clock for the pmpose of bathing in the Awakino river. After a short run, they both- took to the watiii- and the pair had only swum a tew strokes when McCrombie clutched at his companion, who, after trying vainly to assist hiim, freed himsc'f, swam ashore and gave the alarm. McCroiwbh, went down in about IGft of water and never was seen 'to come to the surface again. Messrs P. Batlcy And J. &ott who immediately responded to the call for help, made great efforts to reach the unfortunate lad, 'Mr Batlcy diving several times and though locating, could not reach the body, the depth of water ■being to° great. Constable Flannagan, had been sent for, arrived on the scene some three hours after the neciaenfc occurred, and with the aid of grappling l irons soon had the bodv to the surface.
