CHESS CONGRESS.
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Hj Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Christchuroh, Last Night. The results of the Chess Congress in tho ninth round were: — 1 Pleasants v. Barnes (Ruy Lopez).— Barnes again lost a pawn in the opening, but, getting a counter attack forced the position with a rook sacrifice, Pleasants resigning on tile 32nd move. ' Hieks v. Kelling (Caro Kann). —Kelling won a pawn, and ,pusihin;;his advantage, brdught! about liieks' resignation at move 37.
Hill v. Moore (Ruy Lopez).—Moore got into difficulties, lost a piece, and resigned on the 3; oh move. Bucketfc v. I>.)dds (Ruy Lopez).— Dodds, after Kissing a chance to win a piece, lost the exchange. Buekett scored on the <J2ud move.
C. E. Fox v. Mara (French defence). — Fox acquired a strong position and forced Mara's resignation at move 28. Grierson v. B. G. Fox.—Grierson scored by default. Severne, a bye.
In the tenth round. C. E. Fox won from Dodds, and Kelling from Moore. Buekett scored from B. 6. Fox by default. Hicks has 'won .two pawns from Grierson, Barnes lias won a pawn from Scverne. The game Pleasants v. Hill is about level. Each of these three games requires a tSiird sitting, Mara has the bye. Positions to date:—•
