HIGH COMMISSIONER',? REPORT. Wellington, January 4. Following is the High Commissioner's report, under date London, January 2. (Note. —Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot-.):—■ Mutton.—There has been more inclination to purchase mutton during the past week, but the market is declining on account of increasing supplies. Canterbury, 5%d; North Island, 5 7-10 d.
Lamb.—There has been a better tone in the market this week. The market is firm, witih an upward tendency for better qualities. Canterbury, G%d; other than Canterbury, 6%d.
Beef.—'The market is quiet. New Zealand hinds, (i'/,d: fores, 5%d. Chilled is in moderate supply; hinds, G%d; fores, 5%d. Butter—The market is firm, with good demand. Danish, quiet, 150s to is4s; New Zealand, in good demand at 130s to 138s, unsalted 13;?s to 140s; Australian, 134s to 130s, salted 13Gs to 138s; j Siberian, firm, 128s to 1325; Argentine, 134s to 1365. ( Cheese. —The market is firm. Canadian, rather quiet at 7Sa to 70s; New Zealand, white and colored, fairly steady at 75* U 70s, exceptionally 775. Hemp.—The Manila market is firm,' but den,and only moderate. The Philippine market is rather unsettled on account of the new grading law. The output Lv,m Manila for the week was 1B,,)()0 bales. '■ "ue New Zealand market is quiet, but, steady. Spot quotations are nominally, good-fair grade £2O 10s per- ton, fair £24 10s; January-March shipment fair current Manila (new graded) £2O to £2O 10s, good-fair £24 10s, high points £23 10s, fair £22 15s. Sisal quotations are misleading, but I have 'beard of an offer of fair average quality f.o.b. New York as low as £l9 10s per ton. At present it is impossible to secure freight to Europe. Wool.—The market for merinos is rather steadier, and unchanged for crossbrcds.
