NAPIER MARDI GRAS.
A OPENING. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The Napier Thirty Thousand Club's second "Mardi Gras" opened yesterday morning with a (procession, which was over a mile long, on the Marine Parade and through tlhe town. An immense crowd, estimated at 20,000, lined the streets, and occupied every vantage point on the buildings along the route. The displays in the procession were of an excellent character, some being perhaps, the best ever seen in New Zealand. Humorous displays, decorated motor-carß a-nd cycles, and Yearns of American Indians and cowboys were included in the procession. At Nelson Park the coronation oif tihe Queen, King and Maori Queen were interesting ceremonies. Numerous side shows provided amusement for visitors, and several arena events were got off. The grounds were brightl" illuminated in the even-( ing, and the first day closed with a brilliant fireworks display.
