The wife of Major Coleman, of New Plymouth, died on Thursday.

A London cablegram states that Admiral Sir George Callaghan succeeds Admiral Sir Richard Poore as commander-in-chief of the Nore squadron.

Messrs S. E. Wright, of Napier, and G. B. Laurenson, of Christehurch, are nominees for the employers' representative on the Arbitration Court.

A London cablegram reports- that the Hon. W. F. Massey, Prime Minister of New Zealand, has been elected a Fellow of the Colonial Institute.

A Sydney cablegram states that Mr. Teece, general manager of the A.M.P. Society, has been presented with a life, sized portrait on behalf of the directors throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. Walter Empson, the late headmaster of the Wanganui Collegiate School, left Wellington for London by the Turakina on Thursday last, with the intention of volunteering his services to the British Government in any capacity for which he may be suitable.

An Invercargill message states:—The death occurred at Stewart Island on Friday of Professor James Gow Black, aged 79 years. Since his retirement from the Otago University the Professor had resided on the Island, where he took up land.

A Christehurch. telegram states that Rev. J. N. Buttle, a well-known Methodist minister, died on Thursday. He was president of the Methodist Conference iu 1905. and held appointments, in various parts of New Zealand, afterwards being appointed Foreign Mission Secretary, a position Which he held for a number pf years. He retired from active work last year, on account of illhealth. The. Rev. Buttle was for some jcars iu charge of the New Plymouth circuit, and was a very able and popular minister of the Whiteley Memorial congregation.
