A GERMAN ARRESTED. ALLEGED THADLYG WITH THE ENEMY. By Telegraph.—J.Vr Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. !A German named Ilenrieh Wilhehn Mapnus Duerkop, a partner in a firm of merchants doing business in Auckland under the style of Duerkop anil Macky, was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-day on five informations of attempting to trade with the enemy, Germany. Four of these informations wero laid under the Regulations of Trade Act, 1914, and the fifth under the Trado with tlio Enemy Act), 1914. The hearing was adjourned till 31st December, when an application will be made for a further remand until January Bth. Duerkop is at present a prisoner of war at Somes' Island, and in the event of his release on parole bail will be fixed at £IOO. i „ LETTERS FOR THE TROOPS. ADDRESSED 'TO .EGYPT DIRECT. Dunedin, Last Night. Hon. James Allen informed a reporter to-night that lie considered there was now nothing to prevent letters being sent direct to members of the expeditionary forco in Egypt, and he added that letters so addressed would bo for. warded, despite tlie fact that there has been no cancellation of the ofticia intimation that such correspondence hai to be addressed to the General Posi ■ Offie, Wellington, by which it waa thei forwarded to its destination. The attention of Mr. Allen was direct cd to the cablegram from Melbourne, ii which it was stated that arrangement! had been made for sending cheap week end cables to the Australian troops ii Egypt, and in reply to a questioi whether such a reduction could not b made for similar New Zealand cable : grams, lie stated that the Postmaster General had had the matter in hand fo the past few days, and was trying t make some arrangement with the Cabl Company, whereby facilities could b granted to New Zealand on the line obtained in Australia.
