OBITUARY.
| HON. WILLIAM MONTGOMERY.
By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Hon. William Montgomery died at his residence. Little River, this afternoon at the age of 94 years.
j The Hon. W. Montgomery was a very old and respected settler of Canterbury, and had lived at Little River for a great number of years. He was born in Lon- ' don in 1821, and arrived in New Zealand in 1800, settling in Canterbury. From 1874 to 1877, he represented Akaroa in the House of Representatives, and was leader of the Opposition in 1877. Ho. held the portfolio of Colonial Secretary, ' and Minister of Education in the StoutVogel Ministry in 1884. Three years later he retired from politics, but was ' called to the Legislative Council in 1892, and re-appointed in 1900, being gazetted Honorable in 1907. His son, Mr W. H. Montgomery, subsequently represented his old constituency in the House.
