THE AXEMAN'S CARNIVAL.
I I'l*olll all parts of the province come indications of n bigger crowd than ever ( at the Axemen's Carnival at Eltham on ' Saturday and Monday next. With thousands of people the biggest' Boxing Day attraction for years past has been this notable athletic gathering, and this year's meeting of champions really needs little commendation as far as these people are concerned. There are many, however, who have not yet experienced the enjoyment of a day amongst these powerful sons of the forest —men who for the greater part of the year are buried in the fastnesses of the hush, hewing down the timber, and thus pioneering , settlement and civilisation. There is a l freshness about the whole atmosphere of . j the axemen's ring, and it appeals and ; holds. The greatest interest centres in • ' the Axemen's Clin, with its COO first J prize, a gold medal and the valuable, cup. ■All the champions are "after it," and (thehy will be found, too, pittins* their might and their skill against each other ' in the world's and ?vew Zealand eham- ) pionship chops. The world's and Australasian sawing championships are also to be decided. Aparfc from the interest attachincr to the chopping and sawing, there will he the great tug.of-war, cycling events) and a plethora of sides-hows of all kinds. The arrangements are all well in hand.
