Speak gently of Kewi Poto to the Bar ■ Vons. Simple Sam paid a wonderful dividend at Woodville, A penalty of 121bs. brings Rewi Poto's weight up to Hist. 21b. in the Christmas Handicap. The wind at Woodville, to quote a Taranaki sport, was strong enough to blow the freckles off your face! Croesus, by Royal Fusilier—Our Arms, is a rattling good horse, and just strolled home eacli day at Woodville. The "heads" went strongly for Rewi Poto, Simple Sam, Fashion Plate, and Croesus this week, and the layers received an awful gruelling. Multiplication, winner of the Scurry on Thursday, is a four-year-old by Multifid—Lady Augusta, and carries Mr. C. J. Parker's colors. Aratiatia landed the public's money on Thursday, but it was only by a narrow margin, anil if Waipunoa had been kept handy in the first part there would have been only one in it. ■Mount Victoria tried to win the. Railway Handicap from end to end on the 1 second day at Woodville, but Gold ' Stream came very fast at the finish, and 1 just won 011 the post. I Ladogeur, who, but for being coupled with Ararat, would have returned a record price at Feilding, was seen in winning form again 011 Thursday, but the public did not neglect him this time. ' Steinhiel was the big boom for the Ruahine Hack Handicap, but shaped like I a perfect waster, and could only finish fourth. Stcinhiel would drive a man to—lemonade! Gazette was a strong order for the High.weight Handicap, but got hung up in the tapes. Sir Antrim led for six furlongs, and then gave way to .Square Deal, who won very nicely.. ' All of "Josh" Prosser's horses showed good form at Woodville. Ainitiatia ran a first and a second; Coldstream won t'iie Raihvay Handicap, and Jem, Gold Soult and Stepney were placed in their engagements. Prosser is getting a useful" U-ani together again. The Summer Handicap ■on Thursday was a pretty race. Montana and Lady .Alicia led a bunched field out of the straight and right to the home turn. Here Rewi Poto cam® fast and assumed the lead The weigjhtl was telling over the last hit, and the black horse just got home by a neck from Victoria, who wag galloping over everything, and Stepney was right up in third place. Wild Lupin ran poorly. Judging by his form at Woodville, Marshal MaeDonald can have little chance in the, Auckland Cup. He was well supported each day, Imt was never prominent. The gallop on the first day evidently did Orleans a heap of good. Instead of fading out of it at the finish he came on most resolutlely in the Stewards' Hack 'Handicap, and just beat the consistent but unlucky) Ladify by a' narrow margin. Gold Soult carried a lot of 1 money in this event, but was never dangerous. The Porirua- nag has cost fitjay-at-'.ionie punters a tidy sum this jr.ont'h. Since being ta'ken to 'Stralia Di Gama lias won £238 in slakes. It would be interesting to know how much iiis party won in bets! Waiistcp got! to the end of ten furlongs in 2min 11 l-ssee. at Riccartpn last Saturday. She was never fitter, and looks like, 'picking, up a heat at the Auckland meeting. Encouraged by this year's success the JFnverlov-Waitotara Racing Club will 'offer considerably increased stakes at next season's annual gathering. This is getting to be one of the most popular gaMicrings on the coast. Expect lias ben in a bad way at Awapuni, but is now pulling round. Garance, ill the same'stable, is still 011 the sick list, and Bertrada is very sore. Trainers' troubles never come singly! One doei not often hear of matches, but such an event was got off at Napier Park last week, wlun Composed made tin race of Kirk by over six furlongs and 111 half, level weights up. These sort of things settle a heiiji of argument. With 11 number of race meetings clashj mg nt holiday time decent, starters are '.ll great demand. The Tarnnaki Jockey (.lub is very fortunate in having secured (■lie services of such a capable starter as Mr T. Cameron. Tyson has been thrown out of training and may not be raced until the Egmont meeting rolls along. Sutala has been galloping nicely at Riccarton and is not badly treated •
the two-year-old handicap at Ellerslie. Loyal Arch may find him a tough nut to crack.
A well-known punter down the line lias earned the enmity of the Bar Vons. It came about this way. A friend asked him to execute; several commissions, which lie agreed to do. The first bet was £2O Rewi Poto 011 Wednesday. Then £2O Fashion Mate. The second day he had £2O each Croesus and Square Deal. The punter is now busy trying to collect! The collection, as any church-g.eer will corroborate, is often very, very heart-breaking. Mi Gama caused people worry on the other side. The other day his name was inadvertently omitted from the list of entries for the Filial Handicap at the V.E.C. Spring meeting;. Consequently punters made their wagers as if l)i Gama was not in the race. When his name appeared there was a general howl, and the authorities are still puzzling out the conundrum. Astor is reported to have changed hands, and is now said to be in Wanganui. The well-known trainer, "Jimmy" Peachey, was married this week. Strangely enough the officiating clergyman was the Rev. Bandy! First Flight is still lame and his Auckland prospects look poor. Another cripple in the same string, Aulum11US, keeps 011 winning, and will shake things up at Awapuni at the end of the month.
Sir Knox finished very fast in the Woodville Handicap and will be cherry ripe about Christmas time.
