WITH AXE AND SAW.
ELTHAM'S CJRAXD C'AKXIVATa Just £OO in rash and a valuable cup, for chopping- through two logs! With a prize like that to work for, one can understand that the axemen are "all in." It's a magnificent sight. Ten or fifteen giants of the chopping world outstanding, yet pliant, their bodies lithe and subtle, sixes ground and sharpened until they present a razorlike edge, awaiting the word "go." And then the sharp blows and the tearing of great ga,[>s in tliy logs, the faster blows as the axes bite their way to the Centre, the stentorian yells of the support, ere, then "he's round/ as each completes his first scarf, and co'mineiiccs the acconi wedge-like opening from the back; faster, faster axes flashing in the sunlight, breaths coming in whistling gasps;'the top of the log trembles, so does another; then one last blow, and the first log is severed; the winner grasps the haiiii of his principal barracker, and as often as not falls prone to .the ground, exhausted by the almost superhuman effort. Yes, it's a grand ;,ight, and one to lie remembered. Excursion faros on the railway
