SOCIETY NEWS. PERSONAL. Miss Testar and Miss Read are holiday making at Whangarei. Mr and Mrs Brookimin (Waitara), are spending their Christmas holidays with Mrs Dignun (the latter's sister), at Remuera. Mrs Peat (Otaki), is the guest of her daughter Mrs A. 11. Colvile. Miss Joyce Jackson, who has been the guest of Mrs Birch-Johnston, returned to Wellington by the mail train this morning. Miss Tidy leaves on Tuesday for Wel- ' lington, where she will be the guest of her sister, Mrs Butler. Miss Lovesey (Feilding), is the guest of Mrs A. H. Colvile. Archdeacon and Mrs F. G. Evans and Miss B. Evans left this morning for Oamaru, where they intend spending the Christmas with Dr. and Mrs Scott. ' Miss Brewster leaves on Tuesday for Dunedin, to compete in the New Zealand Tennis Tournament, which is to be held there. Mr and Mrs. J. Cutfield (Wangaiiui) are spending their Xmas holidays in New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs Budge (Hawera) and Mrs Dent (Eltham), were in New Plymouth for a few days this week. Mrs C. Wright (Stratford), has returned, after spending the week end in town. Mrs. Courtney, who has been on a visit to Auckland, has returned. Miss Grant, of the Technical School staff, left this morning for Palmerston. Mr and Mrs. Tniby King have returned from their hrneymoon trip to Auckland. Mrs Arthur Heinpton (Whangarei), lias arrived in New Plymouth to be present at the wedding of her sister, Miss Carrie Bayly. Miss lna Dempsey left this morning 011 a visit to Christchurch. _ Miss Grace Brown, (Feilding), is the guest of Miss \\ ade. SALE OF WORK. Last Monday, the pupils of Miss Stanford's school, held a sale of work and afternoon tea, in aid of the tennis courts and quite a brisk business was done. In the evening, the annual distribution of prizes took place in the schoolroom, the ceremony being performed by the vicar, the Rev. A. H. Colvile. The second half of the programme was a musical one, followed by a short playlet, the characters of which were performed by the pupils. Amongst those present were: After noon: Miss Stanford, Miss C. AFTERNOON TEA. A very pleasant function took place at Mrs Crooke's last Thursday, when the ■ play-reading club gave a farewell afternoon tea for Miss Grant, one of the earliest members of the club. Miss Grant, who is leaving New Plymouth for was presented with a handsomely bound and ilustrated volume of (Shakespeare by the members of the club. A Shakespeare competition (hidden characters) was won by Mrs. Crooke. A most enjoyable afternoon ta was served in the dining-room, the floral decorations being scarlet rambler and pah; pink roses. Amongst those present wen?: Mrs Crooke, Miss Grant, Mrs F. G. Evans, Mrs Sladden, Mrs E. Griffiths, Mrs J. Paton, Mrs A. 11. Colvile, Miss A. Wilson, Mrs C. Weston, Miss Douglas, Miss Smith, Miss Crooke, Miss W. Crooke, Miss I. Crooke, Miss Percy Smith. Mrs Walter Bayly gave a very jolly bridge party last Thursday, in honor of Jli9s Carrie Bayly, and the prizes were won by Miss Wade, Mrs .Percy Webster, and Mrs J. Reid. BREAKING-UP. Last Thursday at the Good Templar hall, the breaking-up ceremony and distribution of prizes of the Girls' High School took place. The dux medal was presented to Miss Joyce Wilson. Speeches were made by the Mayor (Mr J. E. Wilson), Messrs 11. Okey, M.P.. and Dnckrill, interspersed with musical Items by Mrs F. Basham (Eltham), Misses I. Hirst, Thomson, Kea, and Mr Norman Day. Miss Grant, who is resigning the position of principal of the school, was the recipient of two presentations, one from the old girls, and the other from the present pupils. Miss M. Bollinger (head girl), presented Miss Grant with a silver hotwater kettle suitably inscribed, while Miss E. Andrews, on behalf of the old girls, presented her with a handsome tea service and tray. Miss Grant arose n.liid a tremendous outburst of cheering, followed by the Singing of "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow'' by the audience.
