TEMPERANCE ESSAYS.
I .INTER-SCHOOLS COMPETITION. Thirteen girls and eight boys sat, for examination, on Saturday last, at the Good Templar Hall, for prizes presented annually by Mr N. T. Maunder, for competition among the schools of New 1 Plymouth, for the best essays on Temperance, taking the wall sheets as their classic. Rev. A, B. Cliappell was the examiner, and in the course of his report on the papers remarked that on the whole the essays were pleasing and reached a good level. They showed that such a contest must do good in inculcating temperance principles. All the essayists deserved congratulation for their diligence. The prize winners were as follows: Girls: Mary Coleman (West End], 1; Alice Rawlinson (Central), 2. Boys:: Cyril Thomson (West End), 1; Edward Boulton (Fitzroy), 2. The prizes were presented at the annual prize giving ceremonies of the respective schools. For standard work there were different examiners at each school, those officiating being: Central, Mr Bottrill (High School); West End, Mr Diprose (High School); Fitzroy, Rev. C. H. Olds.
