' TURF TOPICS.
(By "Moturoa.") The acceptances received for the Tarnnaki Christmas meeting exceeded all expectations, and stand out as a glowing testimonial to the popularity of the local club and the good work of the club's handicapper, Mr Geo. Morse. Of eleven horses weighted for the Christmas Handicap eight hold their ground. The withdrawals include Maniaroa, who claimed a prior engagement in the Auckland Cup; Byron, who stands down in favour of his stable-mate Passadcna; and Matlow, who has engagements nearer home. Kight is a nice field, and if Kewi Poto, Katana, Passadcna, Wild Lupin, and Sir Antrim go to the post the race should be a fine one. Matlow is the on I v defection froin the Flying Handicap, all the "cracks" holding their ground. Master C'atesby and Royal Loop have dropped out of the Hahotu Hurdles, but a field of ten is well above the average. Patronymic (who is engaged in the Welter), Conney, Fore, and Crawford (the latter being in the Borough Hack Handicap), are the only scratchings for the Stewards' Hack Handicap, a dozen or more less smart hacks holding their ground. Calais (who takes on the Stewards' Handicap), Glacier and The Keveir have not had their engagements continued in the Lepperton Welter, but sufficient ''talent" remains in the eleven acceptors to provide an interesting contest. A nice field of ten, including Toa Tere, Watine and has been paid up for in the Borough Handicap. The entries received for the minor events are very nurnorous, eighteen figuring in the Huatoki Plate, twenty-six in the Warea Scurry, and twenty-three in the Tikorangi Scurry. Glenroy and Zion should keep the others busy in these "flutters." Everything points to the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting being even more successful than those of previous years. It is a rare thing to see so many Southerners ticked off as likely starters in the Auckland Cup. Of the twentyfour acceptors no less than fifteen hail frojn the South.
