BOYS' BOXING NIGHT. ? SOME GOOD WORK. The High School boys' boxing Hmrnament took place last night in the presence of a number of old boys. The bouts were held in the gymnasium, and : in the matter of the ring and appurtances, everything was done "up to the l knocker." Mr Sutherland, one of the . masters, very capably refereed. The • results of the bouts wero as follows: Sinclair v. Sutherland (senior) s—TTiis ! was a very good exhibition. The boys ; were right out after the senior cham- . pionship, and dashed into each other i in good style. Sutherland's superior . science and physique soon put liira u 4he I lead, and a long powerful left, followed i by a right body blow, inflicted terrible . punishment on Sinclair. Sutherland , was declared tho winner, and his victory : ' t was greeted with a great outburst of , cheering. j Pott v. Kidd (senior). —Pott boxed a ' r bye, with Kidd a3 sparring partner, > 4 Borrie and Monteath (junior).— j These two boys had a very brisk go for , the opening match of the junior cham- • pionsliip. Tlx; victor directed j most of his attack to Borrie's head, and scored an easy win, but had. the misj fortune to injure one of his hands. , Atkinson v. Lufiena (under 9st.).—- ' Lucena was too skilful for Atkinson, . and led right through. He scored an easy win. . Jones v. Howell (under 7 at,). —This go was distinctly brisk. The two little II chaps went for each other from the moment the gong sounded, and battered 8 eacli other throughout. Jones, a coraT pactly built boy, had a vary good |U notion of defence, and protected himT > self well, while an occasional-, straight e left disconcerted his opponent. Ho ' " gained an easy decision. Hoffmann v. Snowdon (under Bst.). ■' Hoffmann fouhgt briskly and eventually I proved too much for his opponent. Ho t showed a distinct liking for the fray, - and danced in to thump his opponent, li and got away gain in great style. He.": 1 had all the hall-marks of a coming pro- ■. >r fessional. * ir Yates v. Pott 11., (under 7st.)., —These. two lads boxed a bye in very strenuous J- fashion. y Tuohy v. Ellerm.—Tuohy ■ showed r / e, a good knowledge of the principles of i- tlie game and inflicted severe punishjf ment on his opponent. He made great is play" with a good straight left, which rs was not lacking in power, and ho ob;h tained a good, win. Hutchen v. White (under 7st.), —These is two little fellows fought a great go. ;o They stood up to each other in tho i 0 middle of the ring and punchod each other to their hearts' content. White,/ ;d as the best puncher, was awarded, tho le decision. iU Pott v. Jones (under 7st.). —Jones r kept his man moving from the start, 0 f and a straight left with sound defence ■ - 0 gave him the decision and the cham- " pionship. < Hamblyn v. Graham (under Qst). — re This was an interesting contest, though Hamblyn made it evident that ho ' j. would be the winner after the first r minute. H« got in close, and kept up T " a tattoo on the other man's body, hitting with a sting that was wanting in Graham's offensive, vl Oliver v. Cliff (under Bst.). —Olivy .. Ulid most of the leading, itnd gained the ™ honours for the first round, his long'left ■" .keeping his oppohent moving.' In the 1 second round both contestants mixed it more vigorously. Oliver kept working in close and scoring with left leadS to the face and right body blows. He led : oil points lor this round. He continued to make tilings very willing in the third round, and, scoring frequently in the face, drew blood. He was declared tho winner. HoiTmann v. White.—Hoffmann's long reach was too much for the other lad, and he won an easy victory. Hamblyn v. Lucena (Fina'l, under Ost.) —Hamblyn led easily on the first round. He attacked from the jump, and got • home freely with both hands on tho body. In the second round, Hamblyn a . maintained a*-' easy lead on points, ] V thpugh evidently saving up for the final k. round in which he attaoked from the r- J um P and chased his man round tho ty ri "Jv. His win was greeted with aprg plauso. r m Monteath v. The third rolin 'l "'as very vigorous. Monteath o scored early with a right swing to the l 3 jaw, which put tho otner man on the , ropes. Kidd recovered and went right le 'na man, landing a hefty right and left to the body in rapid succession. Monteath retaliated witli rapid hitting „ to the head, and Kidd's face looked very gory. Thtf referee decided that another t round must be boxed to gain a decision. ! After another match had been fought the extra round came on. Monteath l- . scored first blood with a right swing to ~ the jaw, and though Kidd recovered he d did not seem inclined to mix up with p, his man. Monteath continued a vigoris ous attack, and his offensive tactics n gained him a decision. Pott v. Sutherland (senior).—Pott attempted to infight his man from the jump, but Sutherland was too skilful and whipped in a couple of nifty right hooks to the body before "clinching. Sutherland was slighty the winner in tins round. In the next Potts' wliirlwind attack caused the big man to lose his head, and Pott came out a slight leader. Both men mixed it vigorously !? tll( \ thir d round, and the offensive, ' >,,? an >' thul S- seemed to be with Pott. , I lie referee ordered another round to be - boxed, and after an interval, the boys faced each other again. Both contestants fought from the start, but Sutherland was the cooler of Lhe two, while I ott was evidently done. Sutherland's victory was very popular and his supporters earned him shoulder high
