The mercerised damask tablecloths for 3s fid at the Melbourne's sale are an ideal Christmas gift. A large crowd assembled at Messrs. Nolan and Co.'s auction mart oh Saturday last, the opening day of the great jewellery and silverware sale. Competition was spirited and many interesting lots were sold. Ladies' and gents' gold watches realised from £2 to £lO each, diamond rings from £2 to ;C!) 10s each, oil paintings £5 each, marble clocks ,C 3to £5 each, bronzes £2 to £3 pair , while hundreds of smaller lot? were realised, everything going without reserve. Owing to the large nature of the collection for absolute sale, the sale is being continued every day this w«fk at 2 o'clock, until the whole of the goods are. disposed of. A great feature of Saturday's sale was that ninny purchasers • had their cash given buck to them, no doubt with the object of advertising the sale. Mr Davidson, who is conducting the sale personally, hits methods quite his own, and apart from the interest one derives in securing a bargain, the auctioneer is interesting and well worth i listening to, and good audiences are assured during the remaining days of the i sa\e.
