STRATFORD NEWS.
(From our Own Correspondent.) Stratford has resumed its normal condition after the exciting times this last fortnight. The election passed off very quietly. A very large crowd gathered to hear the results, and behaved well with one exception. Two young fellows got into a heated argument, and it ended in blows. Things looked ugly for a while, but Sergeant McNcely and staff got among the crowd and arrested the two fighters, and lodged them in the "cooling chambers" for the rest of the evening. On Friday, they made their bow to the S.M., and were fined, the Magistrate reminding them that it was cheaper to buy the morning paper and read the result in it, than to fighting in tlies treet. At the Police Court this morning, a drunk, for the third offence, was given fourteen days' "hard." Charles Miller, with "a past," was given three months for being an idle and disorderly person. There was quite a "donnybrook" in a part of Stratford oil Friday night. Two men had a heated argument, and in tho end, one started to make things lively, smashing windows and doors, with the result that he promptly arrested and charged with breaking into a house,, and remanded on bail until Friday next. At the executive meeting of the A. and P. Association, the approximate balancesheet of the late show showed a substantial surplus, and members generally congratulated themselves on the excellent results. Mr Herman Ringer met with an accident on the Opunake road on Saturday morning. His horse started playing up, with the result that the milk cart and cans were.overturned and Mr Ringer and a lad were thrown out. The boy got olf scathless, but Mr Ringer was not so I lucky, being badly shaken and bruised. Strange to say, Mr Ringer has just got over a more serious accident of a similar description that happened some months ago. Broadway presents an unsightly appearance at present. The Borough staff is relaying the kerbing and channelling, and while is will certainly make an improvement on the old style of channelling, most ratepayers are suggesting that there arc footpaths in the Borough without any kerbing whatever which should be done before talcing on this work whfch could certainly have waited till the more important footpaths in the town had been attended to . Several of oiir young fellows are leaving here next week to join the Expeditionary Force.
