REMOUNTS WANTED.
1 ARMY OFFICERS IN AUSTRALIA. I!y the P and 0. Company's steamer Mongolia, which arrived in Sydney from ' London a few days ago, there arrived 'two officers of the British Army and two 1 from, tho Indian Army, accompanied by 1 an accountant. The duty of these officers is to purchase some 75,000 re- ' mounts for the British Army for employment in the westrn theatre of war, and ' possibly also in Egypt should tlie ncces- ' sity arise. It is well known that the ' carnage among the cavalry corps engaged in the present conflict has been ' enormous, and as tine result many of the mounted troops have been fighting on foot. With tlie Germans tlie ease is infinitely worse. If one looks back to the August files of the newspapers and ' scans tlie war news, scarcely a message ' will be read that dors not refer in some wav or other to tlie exploits of the Uhlans (lancers), who were used in the early siages of the war as scouts and terrorising agents ahead of the main army. To-day there is seldom 1 , if ever, 'a mention of Uhlans —they are non est. 1 On AVednesdav morning corroboration of 'this was found.in a calile message, which ' paid that the German cavalry was no more, owing i» thd supply of horses ' having been exhausted. This state of ' things is doubtless having an effect in 'favour of the Allies. Tf the officers are successful in their 'mission, over a million and three-quar-ters of money will be spent in remounts 'in Australia during the coming year. It is unlikely that New Zealand will be similarly visited, lis this country is 'already doing all it possibly enn in the way of supplying horses.
