j THE GREAT BATTLE CONTINUES. RUSSIANS' GALLANT ADVANCE. I WHY LODZ WAS EVACUATED. Petrograd, December 9. Official.—Fighting, has developed at Prasnzsz and Zlachunown, between Warsaw and Malava, and is not finished. We had partial successes in the Petrikau region. The battle begun on the sth southeast of Cracow, between Wielicz'a and the Derjutz River, is developing in our favour. Our reinforcements gallantly forced the passage of the river near Neusandee and severely defeated the German right, which was trying to turn our.-left. Tlie Germans had enormous losses. Our offensive continues. Paris, December 9. A communique states that the Russians repulsed obstinate attacks on,the line Aloff-Lowicz-Strykow-Lodz, but evacuated Lodz because the position formed a salient.
