At .Tacomb, Buxton and Co.'s wool sale !)53S bales were oll'ered, and there was an excellent attendance. Except for a few New Zealand slipes, scoured, for which there was animated competition at late rates, the catalogues consisted entirely of merinos, for which competition was very weak. There are plenty of American orders on the market, but they cannot be executed because of insufficient information with regard to the guarantees required. Sir George lieid has circulated an announcement that any reasonable guarantees will be accepted, but this is not considered sufficiently definite to justify operations. Some traders declare that the best solution of the difficulty would be for the Government to declare, wool i contraband of war Shafty combing de- | clined 10 per cent., and short faulty parS eels 15 to 25 per cent.
