DISTRICT NEWS.
imuTi. (From a Correspondent.) The school social was held on Friday, December 4th, and proved to be quite the event of the season for the children, and, on this occasion, for the grown-ups as well, judging from the happy, laughing faces that tilled the Public Hall. The children's items comprised songs, recitations, and side-splitting dialogues. The children are to be heartily congratulated en the manner in'which they rendered their various pieces, which left nothing to be. desired, all being greatly appreciated by a very large audience, which, ill spite of the wet night, gathered from all parts of the district. Several items were loudly encored. It would be very hard to individualise any of the performers, as they were all out to'give the Uruli public a right royal time, and should feel quite satisfied with the result of their efforts. The school teacher, Miss Clark, -is iilso to be highly commended for the way in which she has instructed the children, and should be very pleased thai her special oll'orts met with such marked success. Ww hardly realise the hard work that is necessary to bring one of these entertainments up to concert pitch. Miss Clark should feel quite satisfied that on this occasion the children were quite able to entertain with the very best. A very pleasing dialogue, entitled "New Fangled Ideas," was also given by Misses Alice and Ethel Smith, and Mr. F. Bishop also rendered a song in his usual masterly style. Dancing was kept going with a swing until the early hours of Saturday .morning, when everyone went home- very tired, but quite happy, and pleased that they had braved the elements to pass one of the most enjoyable evenings spent Uruti for some considerable time. Originally the funds were to be utilised for purchasing school prizes, but the children were not satisfied with this. They thought that they should make, some sacrifice on this occasion to uphold the honor of the Empire, and unanimously decided to go without their prizes, and to donate the money to the relief of the poor in Belgium and Great Britain, so the fund benefits to the extent of some £5 10a. This action deaerves the greatest of praise, and clearly shows that our kiddies are* little 'Britishers to the backbone.
Uruti is looking quite at its best at ■present, the season being very favorable to the district. Feed is in abundance, and, judging from the price butter is Felling at on the English market, and the very high prices being received locally for'fat stock, the farmers should'reap a golden harvest this season. ■ Quite the most interesting topic of conversation just now is 'politics. The fact of having three good and sound me» entered for tiie Parliamentary Stakes in this electorate seems to have caused more interest than usual. By the delates one hears on .different occasions, there should be more than one Uruti candidate for political honors in the very near future.
