AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
Taranaki is fortunate in possessing among its premier holiday attractions that unique gathering, the Axemen's Carnival, which has so drawn to Kltham increasingly large attendances year by year for fourteen years. The New Zealand Axemen's Association, who conducts the Carnival, is directed by men who are now experts, many of them having been associated with it from the day of its inception. The Carnival is quite the Muc-riband event among axemen and sawyers, and annually attracts the flower of the manhood of New Zealand and Australia. One must sec, in order to believe, the marvellous dexterity of these wielders of the bushmen's axe', for they hew in twain a 2-ft. log in a few seconds, casting out chips that weigh pounds. The excitement in the chopping ring is intense, and it is little wonder that the Carnival, year by year, strengthens its hold on the public. On both days of the Carnival there are athletic and cycling events on a specially prepared track, and on the first day this year is a tug-of-war for teams of seven, the prize-money totalling £37. The dates of this years Carnival arc Saturday and Monday, Boxing Day and December 2Slh. Mr T. C. Stahners, one of the original officers of the As- , sociatiun, is still in charge of the secretary's ollice, and be reports that entries in all sections are again excellent.
